CAL-RODS FEATURED CAR FOR MARCH 2025

Written by Terry Lowe

OWNER: CHARLES W. DUNCAN IV

1956 Ford F100 Panel Truck owned by Charles W. Duncan IV

The 1956 Ford F100 Panel Truck, affectionately named Cool Daddy’s 56, is more than just a classic ride—it’s a rolling tribute to family, history, and legacy. Purchased in March 2023, this truck has undergone an evolution that blends craftsmanship with deep personal meaning, transforming it into something far greater than just a beautifully preserved relic of American automotive history.

The Cool Daddy’s 56 retains its original blue paint, now faded into a rich patina that tells a story all its own. Rather than erasing the past, Charles has chosen to honor it, letting every weathered inch of the truck serve as a testament to the decades it has seen. This well-earned character is what makes classic trucks truly special—each crease, rust spot, and faded hue adds to its charm.

Inside, the truck still boasts its original black vinyl bucket seats, a nostalgic nod to its 1950s roots. The interior’s blue color scheme further ties it to its original design, creating a timeless feel that balances both the ruggedness and elegance of the era. Though still a work in progress, the restoration will eventually highlight a perfect contrast between the truck’s raw exterior and its refined, comfortable cabin.

Beneath the hood, Cool Daddy’s 56 is built for power. Equipped with a 428 FE Big Block engine, a rebuilt C6 automatic transmission, and a Currie 9-inch rear axle with 3:50 gears, this truck is anything but stock. Its TCI frame, Mustang II front end, 4-link rear suspension, rack & pinion steering, and Wilwood disc brakes bring modern handling and performance while still holding onto the soul of a vintage classic.

A Tribute to Family & Service

What truly sets Cool Daddy’s 56 apart is its deeper meaning—it’s a moving memorial honoring two incredible men in Charles’ family. The truck is dedicated to his grandfather, who served with the Tuskegee Airmen in the Army Air Corps, and his great-uncle, who was part of the Army’s 25th Infantry Regiment, tracing its lineage to the famed Buffalo Soldiers.

The name “Cool Daddy” comes from Charles’ final conversation with his grandfather, where he affectionately referred to himself by that nickname. Even the date Charles parked the truck in the garage—April 1, 2023—coincides with his grandfather’s signed Army yearbook, another poignant connection between this vehicle and his family’s history.

This truck isn’t just about horsepower—it’s about honoring a legacy. It will serve as a daily reminder of Charles’ grandfather’s and great-uncle’s service, as well as a tribute to the remarkable men who stood beside them. Through car shows and Classic Restoration Ministry, Cool Daddy’s 56 will also carry a greater purpose—spreading the Good News and using classic cars to build connections through faith.

Restoring More Than Just a Truck

Cool Daddy’s 56 is a stunning fusion of vintage charm, modern performance, and heartfelt sentiment. Though still under construction, it is well on its way to becoming a show-stopping tribute to the men who shaped history. This truck is more than just a build—it’s a legacy on wheels, ensuring that the memories and sacrifices of Charles’ grandfather and great-uncle live on with every mile it travels.

Some trucks are built for speed, others for show. Cool Daddy’s 56? It was built to honor, inspire, and share a story worth telling.
